How long have you had migraines?
I started to get migraines after pregnancy.
When do you usually get migraines?
I have chronic daily low grade migraines so anything can trigger them. If it rains, if I’m under stress, if I’m traveling and the plane is landing, if I don’t eat properly. The other day there was no rain and I had no stress and I had a bad migraine. Sometimes there’s no reason.
What have you tried pre-Cefaly?
Everything. I take medicine every day to prevent them. I have taken herbs. I take magnesium every day. I maintain special diet — no dessert foods, no preservatives, I don’t drink alcohol. I have a very boring life. My whole life is about the migraines. I tried acupuncture, bio-feedback, physical therapy of my neck, injections of neurotoxin in the head and neck, massage. You name it, I’ve tried it.
What does your migraine feel like?
It feels like somebody put my head in a vice and is crushing my skull. I have nausea, many times I’m vomiting with severe pain. I could get eye pain. My migraines have been so bad I’ve lost my speech. I’ve also had slurred speech, wiggly lines, flashing lights. I’ve even had stroke-like symptoms in my migraines. I also was hospitalized for a week. I consider myself to be the worst migraineur.
How did you hear about Cefaly?
A patient emailed me when it got FDA approval. I wrote to the company and asked them how I could get it. Everybody knows me as a migraineur.
What’s your Cefaly experience like?
I use it for 40-minutes first thing in the morning, I know it’s supposed to be used for 20-minutes but I do 40. Sometimes I even use it at night. It’s definitely helped me. The left side of my head always really hurts, it’s tender to the touch but now with the Cefaly it’s not and it’s decreased the number of migraines. It’s improved the low grade daily migraines and it’s improved the frequency of the migraines where I have to take rescue (abortive) medicines. I’ve cut that down dramatically. I used to have to take rescue medicine a few times a week, 3-4 times a week, now I’m down to once every 15 days. I’ve written prescriptions as a dermatologist for my patients. I think it’s better than the medications I’m on.
What made you want to share your story?
I just feel like it really helped me. It helped me so much and I feel like nothing helped me. I even offered to tell my story in a medical magazine to a reporter. I feel so sorry for people with migraines. Every single person who comes into my office, even if I’m backed up in my office, I sit and tell them about Cefaly for 20-30 minutes because it’s such a gift. My father has migraines, I have migraines. It runs in the family. Sometimes people, the younger people, will say they don’t have time to use Cefaly for 20-minutes a day. Big deal, you’re getting dressed. You don’t have to stay still, just put it on. The other day I wore my Cefaly to a computer class. I forgot I was wearing it!
