How long have you had migraines?
I’ve had migraines my whole life. I’ve had them since I was 8. I fell on my chin. I had my arms zipped up in my coat and got pushed on the playground. That’s the one incident I remember that started the headaches.
When do you usually get migraines?
Weather is a trigger for me. There are some foods that I have to avoid (dairy, a lot of chocolate at once, bacon, sausage, etc.) I’ve gone through menopause so hormonal changes aren’t a problem any more. Different scents (perfumes or strong odors) can set off a headache that turns into a migraine.
What have you tried pre-Cefaly?
Everything! Since I’ve had migraines for so long I’ve tried every drug that there is. I’ve also done acupuncture and that actually worked for me for a while. I tried neurotoxin injections – that worked too but I had to keep going back for it to continue to work every 2 or 3 months and my insurance wasn’t paying for it. It wasn’t worth it for me to pay out of pocket because it wasn’t lasting long enough. I’ve also done biofeedback and that didn’t work for me. I get massages every three weeks and my insurance pays for that. That helps to relax my neck muscles and has made a big difference in my general well being. I’ve also tried chiropractic care. I still wear a Denpax patch. I’m also on a new CGRP-inhibitor that I inject myself with once a month.
What does your migraine feel like?
About 90% of the time it’s on the left side of my head and it’s like a tight band stomping on my head. Sometimes it’s like there’s a nail pounding inside my head and it’s always just right in that spot.
How did you hear about Cefaly?
I read about Cefaly online and it was when it first came out in Canada. It wasn’t available in the U.S. yet.
What’s your Cefaly experience like?
To begin with it was just OK. I never had the one with the big band, I had the smaller magnetic one. It seemed to help my headaches so I just continued using it. It never took my migraines away but I liked the fact that it made a difference with my headaches so I used it all the time. When I got offered to turn that one in and get the DUAL one, I jumped at the chance to do that and I have only used the hour-long setting and I only do that when I have a migraine. Every time it has taken my migraine away. I am just amazed. That’s the thing that is now so wonderful about this device. The 20-minute one made my head feel OK but the hour-long acute setting when it stops and my head is tingling my headache is gone. The first time that happened I was laying on my bed thinking “Oh my gosh, I don’t believe this.” It was a really wonderful thing to have that realization. I go to a pain center and that’s where I got the prescription. I told my doctor there how wonderful it was and you have to prescribe this to people. I’m just amazed it’s worked every single time.
What made you want to share your story?
I want people to know that it works. I’ve read other people’s stories about things working and I think: “Really is that a real person?” I want other people to know what my story is too. What’s so different about this for me is that this works so well for me is just amazing. I don’t know if it’s that I’m also using these drugs as well; I don’t care. The Cefaly works and I want people to know that. I’m always telling people about it.
