How long have you had migraines?
I have had migraines since I was about 15, over 10 years. I missed a lot of high school because I was in and out of the emergency room trying to get them under control, and ultimately went through nursing school because of my experience (now I’m a pediatric nurse!)
When do you usually get migraines?
Changes in sleep schedule and stress can trigger my migraines, especially working the night shift at the hospital, and living a pretty hectic young adult life. My migraines managed to stay fairly well-controlled until the beginning of 2014, until I started having migraines again out of the blue and wasn’t able to get them under control. I switched my birth control three times, changed my rescue medications around, and missed a lot of my social life and work. Ultimately getting engaged and planning a wedding didn’t help, since stress is such a trigger for me.
What have you tried pre-Cefaly?
Sleep, caffeine, NSAIDs, birth control, ice packs, heating pads, homeopathic remedies – I have literally tried everything. In college, I was able to get them controlled with birth control pills, caffeine, and a twice daily medication originally used to treat seizures that was prescribed to me for migraine prevention. When I would get a migraine, I would use subcutaneous injections for quick relief or a pill of the same medication.
What does your migraine feel like?
It mostly feels like knives are being stabbed into my temples and where my neck meets the base of my skull. Stabbed and twisted. Then it begins to throb and pulse with my heartbeat. I get very light sensitive and touch sensitive, especially on my head and neck. I’ve heard I get “migraine face” where I just stare and my eyes look sunken.
How did you hear about Cefaly?
This past summer, in July 2015, I started seeing a new neurologist and he immediately recommended Cefaly. I had never heard of anything like it before, but I was willing to try anything, especially with a wedding and honeymoon coming up! I got my prescription and ordered it, and received it in the mail (fittingly) on my 26th birthday. I must say, one of the best birthday presents I have ever received!
What’s your Cefaly experience like?
I have now been using my Cefaly almost daily for close to 2 months, and haven’t had a full blown migraine since. I even used it the morning of my wedding, during my honeymoon, and I’ll use it at work on my break. The headaches I do get are much less severe and manageable. I haven’t needed my rescue medications since I started using it, and I have been able to cut down on the amount of caffeine I drink (but I still love my coffee!)
